We were living in our camp travel
trailer in Western Montana while my husband was working in the
woods doing a clearcut for the US Forest service. He had come
home for lunch one day and after eating he took a nap. Our
campsite was set up next to a beautiful creek with the rushing
water flowing over and around large boulders. Knowing how
tired he was and not wanting to disturb him I decided to travel
up the creek from boulder to boulder and trying not to fall in
and get my shoes wet. I had went quite a long ways when I heard
a terrible growl above the sound of the rushing waters and
immediately realized it must be a bear and I was all alone.
I panicked and took off running down the creek jumping from
boulder to boulder and my heart pounding harder and harder and I
was so scared.
I could not look back as I had to focus on the rocks and my
footings. I slipped into the water a few times and by the time
I got back to the travel trailer I was exhausted and in tears
as I entered to wake my hubby only to find he was not there.
A minute later he arrived and apologized for scaring me half to
death not realizing what my reaction was going to be when he
growled. He came running down a little spur road on the
other side of the brush and could not catch up to me to let me
know it was just him.
