As newly weds living in the Lodi,
CA area and with lots of time on our hands we often spent the
weekends panning for gold. Sifting the black sand and hoping
for the big gold nugget to appear we were never dissapointed to
get just the glimpse of gold glitter mixed in the black sand.
One day while visiting with relatives who had moved to a new
area for work in an olive brine plant, I went outside to see
what the guys were doing. Little did I know they were up to
mischief and had seen me coming. They decided to pan for gold
and as I was walking up to them they were swirling black sand
around in a gold pan filled with water when my new
brother-in-law plucks out this huge gold nugget and my eyes
caught a glimpse of it shining in the sun and my mouth dropped
as he states "Oh It's just a little one" and tosses it away into
a field of two foot tall grassy weeds. I went crazy crawling
around in the weeds looking for that gold nugget for a while
until they finally confessed to me that they had been doing
some brazing on a vehicle and it wasn't really a gold nugget.
How foolish I felt to have Fools Gold Fever!
